Mel Zeoli has been an oil painter since 1992. His work reflects his interest in various subjects of the landscape and ocean. His background as a mechanical engineer lends itself to his portrayal of structures and the light that falls on them. He also has a strong interest in the ocean. Living in Florida in the winter months, vacationing in California each year, and having a studio in Maine in the summer allows for the study of this ever-changing scenery. His work has won awards including the Greater Salem Award of Excellence in Oils. He still participates in shows in New England during the summer months so that he may deal directly with his customers. This direct approach has earned him the following of a loyal fan base in that region of the country.
Mel owes a great deal to those who have gone before him such as the Hudson River Painters, Hopper, and Robert Henri to name a few, current artists working today having a direct influence are Don Demers and Deborah Paris. Primarily self taught, he has relied on books and observation as well as painting on a daily basis to pursue his goal of evolving into a better story teller. He also attends workshops each year to further hone his skills as a painter. His work has been referred to as “honest” and his use of color “bold”.
